I took a brief foray into abstraction to paint some shadows. This pattern was on the ceiling of my bedroom one afternoon when I woke up from a nap. It was Spring and my car was parked just so in the driveway below the window and the windshield was bouncing the sun’s rays up though the casement windows. Fortunately, the huge red maple tree outside had not yet filled out to block the effect. When I opened my eyes I saw this blazing pattern above me. I quickly found my camera and took pictures.
All the color was added in this painting, but I kept the relative values true. It is painted on nine 14″ x 11″ wood panels. When it hangs on the wall the nine panels have the form of a casement window and the effect is quite striking. Click here to see more paintings.
